Sub-series consists of letters written by Catharine Parr Traill's sons, William Edward Traill (1844-1917), and Walter John Strickland Traill (1848-1932), sent to their mother and to other members of the Traill family, as well as some financial documents, correspondence with the Hudson's Bay Company, and manuscripts by William Traill recounting his experiences in the West. Included are a few transcripts of letters, prepared by Catharine Parr Traill. William Traill joined the Hudson's Bay Company in 1864 and left his family in Lakefield to work in the West. His letters follow his career between Fort Garry, Fort Ellice, Fort Pelly, Fort Saskatchewan, Fort Vermillion, Fort Chipewyan, and Fort St. James. In 1869, he married Harriette McKay, daughter of William McKay, a prominent chief trader for the Hudson's Bay Company, and he eventually settled in British Columbia. His letters describe his work with the Hudson's Bay Company, his relations with colleagues, experiences with Indians and Métis, travels and buffalo hunts, conditions at the outposts, and family life. Walter Traill also joined the Hudson's Bay Company and was posted to Qu'Appelle and Fort Ellice, then to the Red River District. After turning to farming near Grand Forks, Dakota, he returned to Canada around 1878 to engage in grain exporting in Winnipeg. He eventually settled in Montana. His letters include details of his various businesses and his travels throughout the Canadian West and in the United States.
