Documentary video recording Jocko Carle, an Algonquin Indian from Maniwaki, Quebec, making a traditional birchbark canoe. Opening sequences show Carle felling birch trees in the woods and peeling large sheets of birchbark from the trunks. Cedar logs are split to obtain the heartwood while the remaining cedar wood is split into thin planking. Long spruce tree roots are dug up to be cleaned and used for sewing the canoe seams (tapes 1 - 6). Using a "crooked knife", Carle carves the cedar heartwood into gunwales adding temporary spreaders for shaping (tapes 7-10). On a "building bed", Carle constructs the canoe's skeleton by staking the birchbark framework in place, sewing additional strips of bark to the sides with spruce tree roots and clamping the gunwales to the top edges of the bark (tapes 11-16). Tapes 17-25 show Carle shaping and adding the ribs, crossbars, cedar planking and keel pieces. The canoe ends are sewn together with roots and all seams are sealed with resin (tapes 28-37). The additin of the "deck flaps" completes the canoe. Closing sequences include longshots and close-ups of Carle paddling across the lake in his canoe.
