Series consists of a 234 page unpublished typescript biography of Philip Surrey by Margaret Surrey, with manuscript revisions. The biography is couched in the terms of an autobiography, but was in fact written by Margaret Surrey. It describes in detail Philip Surrey's family background and the early years of his career as a painter. It was never completely finished but does include an account of later years as well.

The biography drew upon personal diaries kept by both Surreys and since destroyed, and included in the series are some pages of transcripts of a few entries from these diaries. Also included is Philip Surrey's complete diary of his 1958 trip to the arctic; this includes an account of his voyage to Resolute Bay on board the d'Iberville, including references to his travel companions, his sketching, the ship getting ice-bound, etc., and a description of Resolute Bay (Note: the original arctic diary has been tranferred to our Documentary Art and Photography Division because it contained drawings; however a photocopy has been kept with the papers.)
