Sub-series consists of drafts of despatches to the Colonial Office from the Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, Governor of Quebec and Lower Canada, Governor-in-Chief of the Province of Canada, and Governor General of the Dominion of Canada. The texts vary from preliminary drafts to fair copies or final drafts. The texts or an abstract of enclosures are often included.

Arrangement note:

Arrangement is based on the view that the fact that the correspondence is with the Colonial Office is more important than the fact that it is from the Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, Governor of Quebec and Lower Canada, Governor-in-Chief of the Province of Canada, and the Governor General of Canada. Therefore, these records have been included within the series Correspondence with the Colonial Office rather than in other series relating specifically to the various geo-political entities. The sub-series has been broken down into four sub-sub-series, one each for Quebec and Lower Canada, Upper Canada, the Province of Canada, and the Dominion of Canada.
