Quarterly or annual returns of ships entering and leaving port were submitted by the Naval Officer and Harbour Master for the port of Quebec to the Civil Secretary, with copies to other interested officials. These returns would have been used in compiling reports for the Colonial Office on trade and navigation. The surviving returns of 1766-1819 found here are closely related to records in RG 4, A 3 volume 1 and series B 58, as well as to correspondence in series A 1. The abstract of ships registered at Quebec, 1849, may have been compiled for statistical reporting purposes.
