The surviving drafts and fair copies of letters and speeches prepared by the Civil Secretary for the Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada in response to letters, petitions, and other documents received from officials and private individuals, despatches from the Colonial Office, and Addresses from the Legislature, 1804-1840, form a single series. Some notes, schedules of documents and memoranda are included. The drafts in volumes 1-2 are undated; few drafts antedate 1816. The letterbooks in RG 7, series G 16 A to G 16 C contain the text of all replies as actually sent. The text of all Speeches and Messages to the Legislature can be found in the printed Journals.
