Series consists of material as follows: Captain Austin's Expedition, 1850 in H.M.S. Resolute, H.M.S. Assistance, H.M.S. Intrepid, H.M.S. Pioneer; letters, 1850-1861, from Captain Horatio Thomas Austin (d. 1865), Captain Erasmus Ommanney, Lieutenant John Bertie Cator, Lieutenant Sherard Osborn (1822-1875), and others (f. 3); Captain Penny's Expedition, 1850 in the Lady Franklin: almost all the letters, 1850-1873, are from Captain William Penny (f. 74).

There is also correspondence of Captain Forsyth's Expedition, 1850 in the vessel Prince Albert. Letters from Commander Charles Codrington Forsyth, which include (f. 187) a plan drawn by Forsyth of Castries Bay in the Gulf of Tartary, "shewing the position of the Russian Squadron on the 20th May, 1855" (f. 160). Captain [Edward Augustus] Inglefield, 1853 in the Isabel and H.M.S. Phoenix; and Commander [Robert] Jenkins in H.M.S. Talbot: letters, 1852-1857, from Captain Inglefield (1820-1894) and Captain Jenkins (f. 190).

There is material relating to the Second Grinnell Expedition, 1853: letters, 1853-1857, from Dr. [Elisha Kent] Kane (1820-1857) of the American navy and Mr. [Henry] Grinnell (1799-1874), American philanthropist (f. 294). Add. MSS. 35306 (Barrow Bequest Volume VII, Franklin Search Correspondence). This material is located on microfim reel A-1543.
