Sub-series consists of incoming correspondence to the Secretary of State and copies of out-going correspondence, memoranda, minutes and other documents of the "General Department" and its predecessors at the Colonial Office, 1801-1925. It deals with the widest range of administrative concerns. Subjects include commissions and instructions to governors and other officials; ecclesiastical appointments; seals, flags and armorial bearings; patronage and honours; payment of Stamp Duties and other fees; customs, commerce and trade; legal decisions and opinions; exhibitions, agricultural improvements, and the Imperial Institute; request from the House of Commons for documents; defence of the colonies; and intelligence reports from individuals travelling abroad.

This general correspondence (forming volumes 176 to 942) exhibits the same organizational patterns as the colony-specific series. For each year there are two major categories: "Offices" and "Individuals". Offices included major government departments and lesser agencies (the Admiralty, colonial Agents, Commander in Chief, Foreign Office, Home Office, House of Commons, Law Officers, Navy Office, Treasury, War Office). For most years, the volume of correspondence justified a segregation of Offices and Individuals in separate volumes. All but the early volumes are prefaced with a list of contents, subdivided by Office and then date, or arranged alphabetically by initial of surname.

The photostats (vol. 232) are limited to the text of a printed pamphlet on education for persons of color.
