Sub-series consists of reports of law officers. Legal questions referred from the colonies were submitted to the Law Officers of the Crown (the Solicitor General and the Attorney General of England), or to the Counsel attached to the Colonial Office, for an Opinion. All colonial legislation, whether passed by a governor with the advice of his council or by a colonial legislature, was subject to review by these Law Officers. Filed with their reports on the validity of colonial legislation (volumes 34-90) and opinions on legal questions (volumes 92-95) are such related or supporting documents as excerpts from colonial gazettes, parliamentary papers and letters from concerned parties.

Filing of the reports at the Board of Trade, and after 1782, the Colonial Office, was consistent within a year, but not from year to year. They might be arranged first by place, then by date, or vice versa. Many volumes include a list of contents noting the Acts or Ordinances reported on, the report dates, and a numerical reference. Volume 91 contains a summary list of the opinions, arranged first by date, then colony, then subject.

Transcripts, available on microfilm, reels C-14021 and C-14022, are limited to selections from volumes 34-44 for the years 1784-1827. The microfilm of the originals extends to volumes 34-61, 63, 65, 67, 69, 71, 73, 75, 77-78, 82, 84, 87, 89, 90, 90, 92 and 95 plus the register (vol. 91), reels B-1626, B-1703 to B-1707, B-3503 to B-3504.
