Sub-series contains the incoming correspondence in CO 323/1-33 and the companion volumes of entrybooks of outgoing correspondence now in CO 324 formerly constituted the series entitled Board of Trade, Plantations General. The Board of Trade (formally titled the Lords Commissioners for Trade and Plantations) advised the Secretary of State on all manner of colonial affairs: customs, commerce and trade, defence, appointment of governors, relations with native peoples, inter-colonial boundary disputes, land claims by individuals, etc. Documents not specific to a single colony should be found in this general series, while those specific reports should be found in such series as CO 42 for Quebec or CO 217 for Nova Scotia.

The original alpha-numeric filing sequence assigned to these records has been preserved, and thus the link between them and the Minutes of the Lords Commissioners for Trade and Plantations (for which, see Colonial Office 391). In preparing documents for submission to that body for its consideration and decision, the Secretary to the Board of Trade numbered each document recognized as a submission in its own right, but not all supporting documents, nor copies of related minutes and orders.

The transcripts, available on microfilm reels C-14019 to C-14021, of selected documents, 1689-1759, from volumes 1-33 are less comprehensive than the microfilms reels, B-3493 to B-3503, made directly from the originals.
