Original letters received at the Commissioner's Office. They are not always addressed to the Commissioner, but to a variety of Hudson's Bay Company officials from Sir Donald A. Smith to officers in charge of a particular Hudson's Bay Company post. Many of the letters are accompanied by enclosures, such as reports, post and district accounts and copies of other correspondence. Volumes 1-69.

The Commissioner's Office correspondence is relatively complete for the years 1874-1892, but few files have survived from Clarence C. Chipman's term as Commissioner. The bulk of the documents in series MG 20 D/26-30 reached the Commissioner's Office as enclosures to letters in MG 20 D/20.
