Letterbook and letterpress copies of Governor Simpson's correspondence with his chief factors, chief traders, servants and other commissioned officers of the Hudson's Bay Company. The correspondence deals with a variety of matters including instructions to chief factors, the management of posts, pensions, the Red River settlement, the Columbia District, and others.

The books are arranged in four chronological series. Volumes 1-57, 1821-1860, volumes 58-80, 1840-1860, volume 81, 1853-1854, and volume 84b, 1824-1860. Some duplication has resulted and is noted at the beginning of each volume. Each volume is indexed alphabetically by recipient at the beginning of the volume.
