The sub-series consists of correspondence, including carbons of Mathews' letters, relating to his involvement in the controversy at the University of Alberta, 1966, American draft dodgers in Canada, the Canadian sovereignty movement, 1968, the Carleton University Memorandum, 1968, the publication of The Struggle for Canadian Universities, 1969, a special study of the University of Waterloo, 1969, the N.D.P., Canadian Liberation Movement, Montreal Committee on the de-Canadianization of the Universities, 1970, Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada, Canadian Council of Teachers in English, National Canadianization Committee, 1970, Committee for an Independent Canada, Art Gallery of Ontario, 1972, and controversies at York University, 1971, and Simon Fraser University, 1974.

The sub-series also includes correspondence with, among others, Davidson Dunton, Dawn Aspinall, Henry Beissel, Gwen Matherson, Denis Smith, Daniel Drache, Millar McLure, Mel Hurtig, Jack Warnock, Abraham Rotstein, and Arthur Lower, as well as correspondence with various university professors, administrators and students. Also including letters to the editor and correspondence regarding Mathews' writings about the Canadianization issue, his public appearances and participation in various conferences. Two additional 1989 letters to Edward Berry and Barbara McDougall were added to the sub-series in 2007 (vol. 46).
