Series consists of manuscripts, typescripts, reviews, some financial material and correspondence relating to George Johnston's own writings and to his translations of sagas and works by other authors.

Series also includes material on 'The Saga of Gisli', 'The Faroe Islanders' saga' and 'The Greenlanders' saga'; Johnston's translations of Scandinavian poetry, including work published in 'Rocky shores' and 'Wind over Romsdal'; his translation of 'Barbara'; and manuscripts of articles and a small amount of material, largely reviews, relating to some of his books of poetry.

Series also includes manuscripts and notes relating to 'Carl, portrait of a painter', including personal reminiscences by Carl Schaefer; corrected proofs of 'The Collected poems of George Whalley', as well as drafts of Johnston's introduction and other material; drafts of Johnston's introduction to his own collected poems, 'Endeared by dark'; book reviews by Johnston; and manuscript and typescript accounts of his reading tour of Britain, 1980, with poets Susan Musgrave and bill bissett.

Series includes other additional material including drafts, notes, some galleys and printed material relating to Johnston's translations 'Bee-buzz, Salmon leap', 'Eagle's blood', 'The Lay of Thyrm' and 'The Schemers and Viga-Glum: Bandamanna saga and Viga-Glum's saga'; and drafts of translations of works by George Faludy, Gunnar Hoydal, Karsten Hoydal, Steinbjorn Jacobsen, Marianne Larsen, Christian Matras, Sigmund Mjelve and Roi Patursson.

Series also includes material on Johnston's portrait of a friend, 'J.C.: a memoir', and drafts of translations of Faroese poet Hedin Klein and Swedish poet Peter Sandelin, as well as Johnston's review of Joan Clark's 'Eriksdottir'.
