Des volcans couvraient jadis une grande partie du territoire, battus au cours des âges par la pluie et le vent, il se sont désagrégés. Pendant d'autres milénaires, les fleuves charrient le limon et, peu à peu, la terre est submergée; seule, une île résiste: le Bouclier canadien. Après quoi le plancher de la mer se tord sous des pressions terribles et dresse vers le ciel ses roches stratifiées; nos montagnes. C'est ensuite la période glaciaire qui voit naitre nos rivières et nos lacs.
