Smith, George Herbert Tyson, 1883-1972 : George Herbert Tyson Smith (1883-1972) was one of the leading British architectural sculptors of the mid-20th century. Born in Liverpool, he began his career there in a mason's yard. He attended the School of Art in Mount Street, and afterwards joined the evening classes at the School of Architecture and Applied Arts at University College, the future University of Liverpool.

He began showing his work in 1907 in the annual Liverpool Autumn Exhibitions at the Walker Art Gallery. Tyson Smith benefited from the surge of memorial-building that immediately followed the First World War, collaborating with a range of Liverpool-trained architects on a number of projects in the north and north-west of England. His most celebrated work is the Liverpool Cenotaph (1930), which is deeply moving and expressive, and exceptional among British war memorials in its uncompromising bleakness.

This plaster maquette for a memorial to the 16th Earl of Derby (Lord Stanley) presents an interesting amalgam of significance: it commemorates a British grandee who was Governor-General of Canada (1888-93) who has a special place in Canada's sporting history as he took a great interest in outdoor recreation and sport in Canada. His lasting gift to the nation was the large silver cup he donated in March 1892 for the best team in Canadian amateur ice hockey. Eventually known as the Stanley Cup, it was won in 1909 by a professional team, the Ottawa Senators, and is the oldest trophy competed for by professional athletes in North America.

The model also combines work of one of the greatest of all 20th-century British architects, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, with that of George Tyson Smith. The proposal to erect a monument to the 16th Earl was first proposed in November 1908 by Frederick Morton Radcliffe, Chairman of the Liverpool Cathedral Building Committee. Tyson Smith's involvement with Liverpool Cathedral began in 1904 when he carved the inscribed foundation stone of the new building. He was subsequently commissioned by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in June 1926 to prepare a '1 1/2 " scale model' of the Derby Memorial based on drawings provided by the architect.
