Commission to Inquire into and Report upon the Facts Concerning the Staking of Certain Areas of the Crown in the Northwest Territories and Yukon Territory (Canada) : The Commission to Inquire into and Report Upon the Facts Concerning the Staking of Certain Areas of the Crown in the Northwest, Territories and Yukon Territory was mandated by its terms of reference to inquire into and report upon the facts concerning the staking of certain areas, pursuant to the Regulations for the Disposal of Petroleum and Natural Gas Rights in the property of the Crown in the Northwest Territories and Yukon Territory, and the application for permits under the said Regulations for the said areas by the Sun Oil Company and California Standard Company and any other person, and to make such recommendations as he may consider proper in the circumstances. The Commissioner was Kenneth J. Christie. (Order in Council P.C. 6027, November 12, 1951, under Part I of the Inquiries Act (R.S.C., c.99, 1927) and on the recommendation of the Minister of Resources and Development).

In October 1951, the Sun Oil Company and the California Standard Company staked a number of areas of Crown land in the Northwest Territories and the Yukon Territory, and submitted applications for permits under Regulations for the Disposal of Petroleum and Natural Gas Rights. As a conflict between the two companies developed over some of the applications, the Government of Canada established a Royal Commission in order to consider whether or not these applications and the manner of staking them conformed to the Regulations ("Commissioner's Report, To Enquire Into A Dispute Arising Out of Applications By California Standard Company and Sum Oil Company. To Explore For Petroleum and Natural Gas On Certain Lands Within The Northwest Territories"). Hearings of the Commission were held in Hay River, North West Territories, on November 30, 1951 and in Calgary on December 7, 1951. RG33/30 General Inventory

The commission's report, undated, was not tabled in the House of Commons. A photocopy, entitled "Commissioner's Report, To Enquire Into A Dispute Arising Out of Applications By California Standard Company and Sun Oil Company To Explore For Petroleum and Natural Gas On Certain Lands Within the Northwest Territories", 24 leaves, is available in the records of this Commission. Researchers may view a microfiche copy of this report by consulting finding aid 33-1, Henderson # 351.
