Interview of Don Murray, CBC television correspondent based in Paris, France. He talks about: his education; his start in journalism at a student newspaper and later at the Montreal Gazette; his being hired by the CBC; the changes brought about in CBC television news by Denis Harvey; Murray’s interest in being an overseas correspondent; his learning to report for television and radio; the importance of learning the rhythm of talking on the air, writing for broadcast and understanding how visuals and words complement each other; his work in Toronto and Montreal; Ottawa and Montreal as traditional jumping-off points for most CBC foreign correspondents; his ability to report in both English and French; his being a correspondent from Beijing and then Paris; doing shorter reports rather than longer, more analytical reports; the size and facilities of the CBC Paris bureau; the importance of the Paris bureau in reporting news of relevance to viewers in Quebec; the French and English parts of the bureau; the lack of resources of the Paris bureau English-language component compared to the CBC’s London and Washington bureaus; the role of the Paris correspondent in covering news in other parts of Europe; the role of the London bureau in doing longer reports; sharing of news footage with the American networks in exchange for other footage and satellite facilities; the use of VISNEWS footage and facilities; the importance of getting breaking news stories on the air quickly, with the reporter in the field, voice track, pictures and interviews; the degree of control from the editorial desk at CBC television news headquarters in Toronto; the advantage of satellite technology in speeding up the transmission of news; the disadvantages of satellite technology, which is expensive and speeds up reporting, eliminating time for reflecting on events as they unfold; the greater resources of the American television networks; the different perspective CBC provides on foreign news; CBC coverage of events taking place in regions of the world where CBC has no foreign bureaus; his coverage of francophone Africa; the basic equipment taken along by Murray and his crew when covering stories; the sameness of American coverage because the American networks are competing with each other to get the same footage; the lack of similarity between CBC and CTV coverage; archiving and obtaining stock footage for re-use in his reports; coverage of events in various parts of the world, such as Israel and Lebanon; the decline in the number of CBC foreign correspondents and the need for more correspondents; CBC’s lack of resources compared to the number of foreign correspondents working for Canadian newspapers; impediments to news coverage posed by difficulties in getting visas; and the difficulty of getting into Iran to cover the news there.
