Interview of Doug Fraser by Ross Eaman, about his career in CBC news from 1947 to 1978. He talks about: the coverage of the Springhill, Nova Scotia mining disaster; technicians keeping the lines open during the disaster; report by Joan Watson from the disaster site; strict writing standards in the radio newsroom; the decision to drop the title Mr. in favour of last name only; the belief that the Associated Press was the voice of the CIA; and the early days of television news. He was not interested in working in TV. Kingsley Brown came from Canadian Press and was critical of TV news. CBC reporters worked for both TV and radio in the early days. The news service wanted to gather more news and for that needed a larger budget. Fraser says that television news is the early days used more word descriptions rather than letting the film speak for itself. Reporters tended to write the scripts and then showed them to cameramen, who would then shoot images to match the script. They did not have full confidence in the images so they would write a more desriptive script. There was a greater use of stock footage. Nowadays, there are separate radio and TV reporters due to the volume of news, the greater degree of complexity and the greater amount of TV air time. Fraser also talks about early recording technology that largely confined actuality sound to features and documentaries because it was too cumbersome to take out into the field for spot news reporting. He recalls that TV editors were excellent, able to sense what the reporter wanted. He describes disc cutting technology in use when he first joined the CBC and the difficulty this posed for editing. When doing television interviewers, the CBC would also record the interview on tape for use on the radio. He mentions CBC broadcasters Max Ferguson and Harry Mannis. Also discussed is the concept of journalistic objectivity and the need to attribute sources. He left the CBC in 1978 and worked at the United Nations.
