The Pan American Games, sponsored by the nations of the Western Hemisphere, feature amateur athletic contests in a variety of sports. Since 1951, they have been held every four years, prior to the Olympic Games upon which they are modelled.~This unedited footage is part of the coverage of the 1979 Pan Am Games held July 13 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Narrative by an unidentified commentator accompanies excerpts of horseback, boxing, high jump, foot race, hurdle and wrestling events.~Excerpts from two days of competition in horeseback includes jumps by Melanie Smith of the United States on Val de Loire, contributing to her team's gold medal, and Michel Vaillancourt on Crimson Tide and Ian Millar on Brother Sam, helping to win the silver for the Canadian team. Millar is interviewed about the difficult, sand footing on the course.~Round three of the 51 kgs semi-final competition in boxing shows Alberto Mercado of Puerto Rico victorious against Ian Clyde of Canada. (In final Pan Am results Mercado gets the gold; Clyde wins a bronze).~The men's high jump event includes shots and replays of jumps by gold medal winner Franklin Jacobs of the United States; silver champion Ben Fields, also from the U.S.; and bronze medalist Milt Ottey of Canada.~Runners competing in the women's final 1500 metre race include Mary Decker of the U.S., this year's gold medalist; Julie Brown of the U.S. winning the silver; and Penny Werthner-Bales of Canada, who wins the bronze.~Coverage of the women's high jump includes an interview of Debbie Brill of Canada before she performs her bronze medal jump and a replay of the jump by Louise Ritter of the U.S. as she establishes a personal best record, as well as a new Pan Am record.~Footage of the eight female competitors in the 100 metre hurdle race includes Deby LaPlante of the U.S. who gets the gold and Sharon Lane of Canada who wins the silver.~Wrestling is covered with excerpts of matches in the 62, 68, 74, and 82 kilogram classes. In the latter category, Dan Lewis of the United States is shown in his winning match against Clark Davis of Canada, who settles for silver.~Canada placed second in the overall medal standings in the 1979 games. <60mn>
