The opening of the Canadian Universal and International Exposition of 1967 is covered live. The program begins with footage of the Expo '67 site in Montreal, Quebec including the pavilions representing various nations, and an introduction in English and French by an unidentified woman who explains the exhibition's purpose; its setting; the ceremony about to take place; and the theme of "Man and His World", inspired by the writings of French author, curator and philosopher Antoine de Saint Exupéry.~Readings from the writings of Saint Exupéry, in male and female voices, accompany aerial and panoramic views of Isle Ste. Helene and Isle Notre Dame in the St. Lawrence River; and shots of the pavilions representing the United States; the Soviet Union; France; Great Britain and Canada.~Lloyd Robertson's voice-over narrative accompanies footage of the actual ceremony, including: approximately 7,000 guests assembled at the Place des Nations; the arrival of His Excellency the Governor General Roland Michener with his Aide-de-Compte and Her Excellency Norah Michener; the royal salute to the Governor General from the Vandoos, the Guard of Honour of the Royal 22nd Regiment; the Canadian Black Watch and dressed in regimental tartan, directed by [Captain Harvey Eagles]; and Pierre Fournier, Master of Ceremonies, introducing the speakers.~Speeches in English and French are by: Pierre Dupuy Commissioner General of the Universal and International Exposition; Mayor Jean Drapeau of Montreal; [Jan Albert Gorice] President of the College of Commissioners General; The Honourable Daniel Johnson, Premier of Quebec; the Right Honourable Lester B. Pearson, Prime Minister of Canada; and His Excellency Roland Michener. The speeches emphasize international cooperation; the responsible use of technology; and man as a creator, explorer and participant in the world community. Architects, designers and labourers who created the pavilions, as weel as governments and individuals who staged the exhibition, are paid tribute.~The narrator informs us, just after the last speech, that 20 European countries have joined CBC via Atlantic satellite in addition to the Pacific satellite coverage added earlier, thus extending coverage through Western Europe to Eastern Europe as far as Moscow, USSR and through the United States and westward to Japan.~Remaining footage includes the raising of the flags from the 62 countries represented at Expo '67; 1500 hostesses from the pavilions; the arrival of the Expo Flame carried by 10 military trainees representing the provinces of Canada; the Prime Minister lighting the Explo Flame; the Governor Gerneral's official inauguration of the exhibition; and a flypast by the Golden Centennaires of the Royal Canadian Air Force. <90mn>
