The material consists of those entries, in each of the city's five wards, which relate to persons listed as having been born in Canada. The families of such persons are also included. Excerpts relating to persons born in Canada were also made from the section devoted to listing persons who had died during the year ending 1 June 1850. The information provided includes dwelling number, age, sex, colour, occupation, place of birth, marriage during the year, school attendance during the year, literacy, handicaps. The returns of deaths during the year give information on age, sex, colour, free or slave status, marital status, place of birth, month of death, occupation, cause of death, and number of days ill preceding death. Arrangement is by dwelling number within each ward. The census returns, but not the deaths during the year, are indexed at the end of the book. An index to the deaths has been added to the index for the returns in Finding Aid No. 1433.
