Enlisting in 1914 for "the adventure," he describes his initial training in the "cattle sheds and horse barns" in Hastings Park, Vancouver.~At the battle of the St. Eloi Craters, he recalls that "the shellfire was so heavy, you couldn`t hear just one shell bursting - it was just a continual roar." He says, "Ninety-five of us went in at the time and thirty-five came out." After the battle, McCaulay remembers a harrowing incident while participating in a working party. He says, "I didn`t hear the shell coming... didn`t hear it burst, but I found myself about thirty-five yards or so, away..."~Transferred to England as an instructor, he remembers the flag raising ceremony that signalled Armistice. He recalls that he was "so happy that some way or another, it didn`t seem real that we were free of it all."Language:EnglishDetailed holdings information: -
