J.F. [Johnny?] McKay is interviewed about his experiences with the 28th Battalion during World War I. McKay remembers the "impressive moment" as his ship docked at Davenport, England, and the warm greeting extended to the Canadian troops by the English. He remarks that the advanced training in England consisted mostly of "range shooting" and "route marches." Thinking back to his first time in the trenches in Flanders, McKay describes the trenches as "breastworks with shallow trenches protected by walls of sandbags." He also remembers the massive "Glory Hole" explosion planted by the German tunnellers who had mined the area.~He tells about the reconnaissance mission led by the Canadians at the battle of the St. Eloi Craters, however he declines to elaborate on the rout of the Canadians at the battle of Mount Sorrel. "I don't want to remember too much about that show." Turning to the topic of the Somme battlefront, MacKay explains that his unit was ordered to "Sausage Valley," where they were asked to volunteer "to walk ahead of the tanks and move the wounded men out of the line." Conceding that the tanks, described as "caterpillar tractors," offered only "minimal help" for the advancing infantry, the batallion headed to Courcelette along the "sunken" Menin road, where "the stench was terrible from the rotting horseflesh."
