Interview with T.E. Ireland and C. Hatcher about their war service with the 10th Canadian Infantry Battalion during World War I.~Ireland, who enlisted in the fall of 1917 after being rejected three times for poor eyesight, states that he was "very proud" to serve because the reservists "were just going to knock the stuffing out of every German..." Sent to the Western Front in August 1918, he joined the 10th as a bomber during the battle for Cambrai. As the Canadians advanced in "open order" to Cagnicourt near the Drocourt-Quéant Line, he recalls encountering a "bad spot" beyond the lines where he was wounded by shrapnel during the enemy counterattack, thus ending his service.~Corporal C. Hatcher describes the gas attack at Ypres and the Canadian attack at St. Julien Wood where "bullets were coming from everywhere." After recuperating in England from illness, Hatcher volunteered as a stretcher bearer with the 10th at the battle for the Regina trench at the Somme. Wounded during enemy machine gun barrages, Hatcher states, "That was war for me."~He concludes with an account of his misfortune of being sentenced to the cells for 28 days for being AWOL when he married.
