Jack Pinson discusses his experiences with the 7th Canadian Infantry Battalion at many of the Canadian battlefronts of World War I.~As a "green" battalion at Festubert, Pinson recalls the "whiz bang" shells as the Germans "bombarded us all that day and made shambles of us." Pinson also saw action at Givenchy and Ploegsteert. At Mount Sorrel, Pinson remembers that "you couldn't go in or out without losing men."~At the "Bluff" in the Ypres salient in July 1916, the battalion halted the German advance. As part of a working party at the Hessian Trench at the battle of the Somme, Pinson states, "It was a shambles again," however "we did the job we were supposed to do." With the objective of taking the German [Ogsberger] trench at Vimy, Pinson describes the area as a nest of dugouts filled with enemy machine gunners. As the Canadians rapidly advanced with great losses he says, "We could not stop to take them [German] prisoners and we couldn't leave them there alive."~Describing Hill 70 as "one of the killing battles of the war," Pinson says, "We went in there 700 strong that morning and in one hour there was 100 of us left." "The machin gun nests just mowed us down." Pinson was wounded at this battle, transported to hospital in England and subsequently to Canada on a hospital ship.
