Series consists of correspondence received and generated by MacDonald in his capacities as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (M.L.A.), Cape Breton South 1941-1945, and as an officer of the Canadian Congress of Labour (C.C.L.) and of the Canadian Labour Congress, 1942-1975 regarding constituency concerns, the provincial and national status of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (C.C.F.), and the state of organized labour in the Maritime Provinces. Of particular note are C.C.L. organizers' and negotiation reports, 1945, Nova Scotia C.C.F. executive committee minutes and financial statements, and references to C.C.L. organizers' salaries and its finances.

MacDonald's correspondents included M.J. Coldwell, Lucy Woodsworth, Clarence Gillis, Fred Young, A.R. Mosher, Henry Harm, Pat Conroy and Eugene Forsey. The series also includes MacDonald's business itineraries and some circular letters, 1950-1975.
