The series (file 2) consists of twelve letters, 6 November 1870 - 10 January 1871, written by Cimodocée Casault (d. 1876), wife of Lt. Col. Louis-Adolphe Casault (1832-1876) of the 2nd Quebec Rifles, and daughter of the politician Joseph-Édouard Cauchon (1816-1885). Eleven of the letters were written in English to Mary Bowles (née MacLeod), wife of Joseph Bowles of Quebec City, and great-grandmother of Mhairi de Castro. One letter, 6 December 1870, was written in French to Josephine ("Ma chère petite soeur").

The letters describe Mme Casault's journey, with her baby, from Quebec City to Manitoba to join her husband, who was with the militia battalion sent from Quebec to help in restoring order after the Red River Rebellion. They give an account of travelling by train and wagon via Toronto, Sarnia, Chicago, St. Paul, and Pembina to Fort Garry, with comments on conditions, food, dress, and social events such as a ball at Fort Garry. They remark that the Métis were friendly towards Mme Casault, but not towards Colonel Jarvis in whose party she made the journey.
