Television program featuring an interview with Canadian painter Alex Colville followed by a discussion between English journalist/critic Malcolm Muggeridge and Canadian poet/teacher Irving Layton. Helen Hutchinson introduces the three men and interviews Alex Colville in the studio about: his decision to give up teaching to paint; his style of painting; his choice of subjects; the scuptural quality of his figures; and his interest in portraying human and animal figures in relationship to their environment. Shots of Colville's paintings alternate with interview segments. A studio discussion on modern (20th century) literature follows, in which poet Layton and critic Muggeridge express opposing views. Layton asserts that experience is the artist's mistress and praises 20th century fiction for embracing both good and evil, while Muggeridge contends that most of modern fiction is fragmented, incoherent, and lacking in spiritual strength.
