A documentary on Canadian humanitarian and medical missionary Robert Baird McClure. Stills and footage of Dr. McClure in China and India accompanied by his voice-over comments alternate with interview segments to convey his dedication to improving conditions in the Third World. Interview questions from Helen Hutchinson and Roy Bonisteel reveal McClure's optimistic, humorous, pragmatic attitude and cover such topics as: who he became a missionary; whether it is a glamorous life; the reaction of Church officials when he became the first non-ordained moderator of the United Church of Canada (1968); his emphasis on family planning in developing countries; the family unit in Western society compared with that of the Third World; the role of religion today; what we can learn from other cultures; and conditions in India and China. Archival footage includes: Dr. McClure examining patients at the Ratlam Mission Hospital in India (1950s and 60s); Dr. McClure in China (1920s and 30s) treating patients at Christ Hospital; at a table with other missionaries and Mao Tse-Tung, where they discussed medical services under wartime conditions; fatalities of the Japanese invasion of China in 1937; and McClure and his wife in China. Noteworthy stills include McClure as a child with his parents, who were Canadian medical missionaries to China.
