Series consists of correspondence of Sir James Montgomery to John Spottiswood, a barrister of the Middle Temple, London, concerning his estates and other business affairs, 1767-1803, with copies of a few papers relating to Quebec, 1765-1775, including a report by James Murray, 1765. This report provides statistical information and observations on the province: population, dwellings, arable lands, agriculture, farm animals, native peoples, religious denominations, trades and the clergy. The observations relate to the general level of education and the mores of the population and to the establishment of a civil government and its offices. Also includes a statistical table on exports from Quebec, 1770-1775. See reel A-865 or reel A-1941.
