Series consists of three original documents pertaining to the choice of Ottawa as the Seat of Government of a United Canada. There is a covering letter on a Windsor Castle letterhead, dated 27 October 1857, reputed to have been written by Queen Victoria which accompanies the memorandum on the seat of government. The memorandum, in the hand of Prince Albert, but initialed by Queen Victoria, is dated Windsor Castle, 27 October 1857, and relates to the choice of Ottawa as the Seat of Government, outlining the political and military implications of that choice. There is a letter from Prince Albert to Labouchere, dated 17 February 1858 regarding the reaction to the choice of Ottawa as the capital of a United Canada.

General note:

The original letter dated 27 October 1857 from Windsor Castle was acquired in 1967 from Mr. Conway Barber of La Marque, Texas. The original memorandum dated 27 October 1857 written by Prince Albert and initialled by Queen Victoria was acquired in 1966 from Mr. Walter R. Benjamin of New York.
