Series consists of correspondence which describe the unpropitious circumstances of George Stacey's coming to Canada and the years of struggle and endurance which followed, 523 pages. Hoping to be free from the embarrassment and expense caused by his son, who had fallen into bad company and incurred large debts, George Stacey Sr. arranged to ship his son George and his wife, Eliza and small baby to Canada, and for the two older children to remain in England in the care of the family there. Eliza reluctantly parted with her children, Frederick and Louisa, who later joined their family, and set off for Canada.

Extreme poverty and hardship were Eliza's lot when she got to Canada; she worked hard with her husband and raised a large family. A legacy to Eliza, enabled them to purchase the small farm of Drighlington, near Sherbrooke, Que. George settled down to the rigourous life of a pioneer, encountering many disasters as an inexperienced farmer. He witnessed the flood of Irish immigrants; enjoyed the effects of the coming of the railroad; and observed the development of the nation. Related documents, 139 pages.
