Series consists of eleven letters addressed to Haultain relating to the Militia Bill of 1862, the appointment of staff officers in the militia, the application of townspeople and villagers for a home guard as a protection against the Fenians and to other political matters. Also included are two newspaper clippings concerning the organizing of a Volunteer Field Battery, 23 January 1862 and the Democratic County Convention, 11 October 1865, together with five letters from Haultain to his wife, mainly of a personal nature, but with a few references to politics, 79 pages.

In addition, there is a draft letter to the Globe, 1865 and notes, 1862 and 1863, relating to the Canadian militia, 12 pages.
