Series documents the work of Al Knipfel as the IUE staff representative for western Ontario. Records include personal files, subject files, and local union files. The bulk of the series consists of the local union files, which document contract negotiations for the locals that Knipfel serviced (including the Automatic Electric Company plant in Lethbridge, Alberta), grievance proceedings and correspondence. Knipfel's day-to-day activities are recorded in his journals that contain brief notes on meetings and other business. Of note are the files of the Council of Industrial Organizers (CIO), which was the union of IUE staff members.

Knipfel, Al, 1913- : William Allen "Al" Knipfel was born in May 1913 at Port Dalhousie, Ontario, and was a tool maker by trade. He joined the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE) in 1948 while employed at the Canadian General Electric (CGE) plant in Cobourg, Ontario, and served as president of UE Local 534. While president, Knipfel campaigned actively to have the CGE plant join the IUE, which it did in the fall of 1949. Knipfel became a full-time staff member of the IUE in March 1950, and he served as the union's representative in western Ontario.
