The arrival of winter in the month of December seals up the harbours of the Great Lakes with ice, greatly impeding freight traffic. Shots of the landscape buried in frost and snow testify to the low temperatures. But all is not lost, as an intertitle reassures that "Man rises superior to Nature" as "systematic ice-breaking operations advance the season of navigation by several weeks". The twin cities of Fort William and Port Arthur are saluted for their enterprise, as channels are kept open all winter due to sturdy tugboats equipped with re-inforced hills enabling them to grapple with the thickest ice. Teaser footage of a tugboat sailing through cakes of broken ice on the lake is shown. The general process of ice-breaking is demonstrated, starting with a short explanation of the formation of ice masses on the lake that culminates in a shot of an ice section in Thunder Bay measuring 38 inches in thickness. Footage of the tugboat "Strathmore" in action, manoeuvering for a full-steam ahead charge to break an ice cap with its hull. The specially-built ship ploughs its way through the frozen surface, often riding on top and breaking through the ice by sheer weight. Several runs are required by the "Strathmore" until ice finally breaks, leaving a channel of water and crushed ice cakes in its wake. The job now completed, the tugboat returns to home port where a huge hibernating grain carrier awaits for eventual departure on a cleared passage, thanks to the ice-breaking work of the "Strathmore". <9mn 52s>
