Series consists of files documenting functions and activities of the Research and Legislation Department, such as the CLC's Task Force on the Anti-Inflation Board, including files on particular cases, the day of protest, and the CLC's court challenge to the anti-inflation legislation; boycotts; the CLC's Commission on Constitution and Structure (including the CLC's survey of Canadian standards in international unions); and other legislative and public policy issues. The files contain correspondence, reports, minutes, addresses, collective agreements, notes, legal and court documents, publicity and educational material, print matter, and other material.

Canadian Labour Congress. Research and Legislation Dept : The Research and Legislation Department was created in September 1976 with the merger of the Legislation Department and the Research Department. The Director of Legislation, Ronald Lang, became the first director of the new department. The Research and Legislation Department continued the principal functions of its two predecessors. Among the new department's legislative activities were informing the federal government, Parliament, and federal boards and agencies of the CLC's positions on legislative issues by preparing briefs and submissions; liaison with the federal government (including ministers and senior officials); the monitoring and study of federal legislation with an impact on workers and the labour movement; and assisting affiliated unions with federal legislative issues. The department's research activities included assembling statistical economic data for officers, gathering information on wage controls, providing advice on economic matters, and otherwise providing research support for the CLC's programmes.

Arrangement note:

Regarding the files on the Anti-Inflation Board (AIB) in this series, many were originally created by other departments and officers. Apparently AIB files from different areas of the CLC were assembled and transferred to the Research and Legislation Department.
