Series consists of manuscripts and notes for the text of a proposed book on lettering by Carmichael, intended as an introductory study or beginner's manual and includes samples of lettering for use as illustrations in the book, including some early work signed Frank Carmichael, Orillia. The series contains a layout of the proposed book and proofs of some of its pages, the type having been set by Carmichael by hand on his Washington Press in his studio in Lansing. Also included is reference material relating to the book, including the art bulletin Roman Lettering (Toronto: Dept. of Education, Ontario, 1927), to which Carmichael had contributed.
