Item is an autobiographical memoir of the life of Anthony Brocklehurst. It tells of his early working life in the shoe and boot-making factories of Leicester but mostly deals with his life on the Canadian prairies between 1907 to 1914. Brocklehurst describes the steamship passage to Canada and the seasonal cycle of work of a hired hand on a Manitoba farm - including living conditions, rates of pay, and pastimes. He also tells of the hardships of homesteading on a remote quarter section in Saskatchewan, from poor or non-existent roads to building a shelter and clearing the land. During this period, he worked in lumber camps and did other odd jobs to earn money to improve the farm, describing this work in detail. The manuscript discusses his enlistment in 1914 and wartime experiences briefly before coming to an end.

Brocklehurst, Anthony, 1885-1973 : Anthony Brocklehurst was born 1 September 1885, in Leicester, England. He worked a variety of jobs mainly in shoe and boot making factories from the age of thirteen to twenty-one. In 1907, a price war in passenger fares among shipping lines enabled him to afford a passage from Liverpool to Saint John, New Brunswick. He travelled by train to Manitoba where he began working as a farm labourer on a remote homestead while saving money for a "grub stake". He settled on his own quarter section of 160 acres near North Battleford, Saskatchewan in 1909 and homesteaded there until the First World War broke out. Brocklehurst then volunteered to serve in the 31st Alberta Regiment and went overseas in 1915.

He came back to Canada after the war but returned to England in 1923 where he set up business as a milk retailer. He died, 27 August 1973, at Holbeach, Lincolnshire.
