Microfilm reels A-1978 to A-1980 reproduce selected records from the Sir James Saumarez collection. These selections focus on the career of Sir Philip Bowes Vere Broke, most particularly during his command of HMS SHANNON and the capture of the CHESAPEAKE. The records include correspondence and orders received by Broke from the Admiralty, senior and fellow officers; an entrybook of letters and orders by Broke; an volume of orders issued by Admiral Warren to vessels on the Halifax station; logs, "Remarks" books and Punishment book of HMS SHANNON; accounts of the prize money for the CHESAPEAKE; and Broke's personal notebooks/journals as well as letters to his wife. The documents relate both to the capture of the CHESAPEAKE and activities of vessels on the Halifax station generally. The bound volumes include occasional diagrams of sails and nautical gear and coastal views. The correspondence occasionally touches on North American economic, social or political affairs, while the logs and journals include meteorological observations.

Saumarez, Sir James, Lord de Saumarez, 1757-1836 : Sir James Saumarez (1757-1836), Lord de Saumarez, commenced his long career in the Royal Navy in 1770. He achieved the rank of admiral in 1814 and was raised to the peerage in 1831. His son, Sir James Saumarez, married the elder daughter of Sir Philip Bowes Vere Broke.

Sir Philip Bowes Vere Broke (1776-1841) entered the Royal Naval Academy at age 12 and was appointed to HMS BULLDOG, a sloop, in 1792, under the command of Captain George Hope. He achieved the rank of captain on 14 Feb. 1801. On 31 Aug. 1806, he was appointed to command HMS SHANNON, a 38-gun frigate. In June 1811, the SHANNON was ordered to refit for foreign service and sailed to Halifax, arriving in September of that year. Broke carried out a resolution to make no prizes, which would entail sending away prize crews and weakening his force, but rather scuttled the captured vessels. Broke subjected his crew to a course of systematic training in which they were exercised at quarters and in firing at a mark, attaining a high degree of expertise. In May 1813, HMS SHANNON was cruising off Boston, keeping watch on the American frigate CHESAPEAKE, newly recommissioned by Captain James Lawrence. In an ensuing battle, one hundred men were killed and Broke himself was seriously wounded. HMS SHANNON captured the CHESAPEAKE on 1 June 1813. In 1802, Broke married Sarah Louise, daughter of Sir William Middleton.

Sir John Borlase Warren (1753-1852) entered the Royal Navy as an able seaman on HMS MARLBOROUGH in 1771. He served on the North American station during the American Revolutionary War and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1778, Captain in 1781, and Admiral in 1810. He served as Commander in Chief on the Halifax (Atlantic) Station from spring 1813 to spring 1814.

Arrangement note:

Inclusion of Sir Philp Bowes Vere Broke's correspondence and records in the Saumarez family archives may be explained by the marriage of Broke's daughter (and heiress) to a son of Lord de Saumarez.
