Fonds consists of microfilmed material, transcripts and photocopies including 14 letters from Grant to his mother and brother, Thomas, 1795, 1800-1808. Thirteen of the letters were written while Grant served with his military regiment in Upper and Lower Canada. There are also two recipes for preserving peaches. The letters document the birth of his children, his marriage and the various residences in which they lived, the health and progress of his young family, their servants, local birds and game, plants and seeds, travel conditions for a military officer with a wife and children, the 41st Regiment, his accounts, and the house and gardens at Amherstburg. The original material was created in Upper Canada. Microfilmed material is located on microfilm reel A-2080.

Grant, Jasper, 1762-1812 : Born in 1762, Jasper Grant was the son of Thomas Grant of Kilmurry, Ireland and Elizabeth Campion. In 1799, Grant married Isabella Odell and had four children, all born in Canada: Jasper St. James (b. 1800), Isabella (b. 1801), Thomas (b. 1803) and Susannah. Susannah married J.F.W. DesBarres, grandson of J.F.W. DesBarres, Lieutenant Governor of Cape Breton.

Jasper Grant began his military career with the 4th Regiment of Foot as an ensign in 1781. By the end of 1793, he had attained the rank of Captain and transferred to the 41st Regiment with which he remained to the end of his career. He was promoted to the rank of Major in 1798, Lieutenant Colonel in 1803 and Colonel in 1811. As a major, he was the Commanding Officer at Fort George, Upper Canada, and later, Commanding Officer at Amherstburg. He served with his regiment in Upper and Lower Canada, 1799-1812. Grant died in 1812.

The transcriptions of the letters were made in 1989 from the originals in the possession of Mrs. David Micklem, Langleys, Chelmsford, England. The original letters were microfilmed by the London Office of the National Archives in 1992.
