Fonds consists of minutes of meetings, correspondence, reports, memoranda, notes, subject files, reference materials, and newsletters relating to the activities of the Canadian Association for Ethiopian Jewry (CAEJ) from 1970 to 1993. Included is information relating to CAEJ's advocacy program; its relief operations within Ethiopia; relations with other Jewish organizations in Canada and the United States; and its fund-raising activities.

The fonds also includes photographs relating to the Association's relief and rescue work in the 1980s.

Canadian Association for Ethiopian Jewry : The Canadian Association for Ethiopian Jewry (CAEJ) was founded by a small group of Jewish volunteers from across Canada in 1978 to provide aid, relief and rescue to tens of thousands of Ethiopian refugees suffering from disease and starvation as a result of the drought and resulting famine which swept Ethiopia and the Sudan in the 1980's. Based in Toronto, its primary mission was to evacuate refugees of all religious faiths, but mainly Jews, to either Canada or Israel through regular and clandestine means.

Its immediate concern was to alleviate human misery and suffering by providing direct humanitarian assistance in Ethiopia. CAEJ placed non-sectarian medical teams in several refugees camps in the Gondar region of Ethiopia and the Sudan. It supplied the camps with food and water, surgical and medical supplies, oxen, agricultural implements and grain seed. It also coordinated the setting-up of feeding stations and medical clinics at the camps with other Canadian relief agencies including the Canadian Red Cross and the Canadian Mennonite Committee.

Relative to its small size, CAEJ's work had a major impact in saving lives and received widespread Canadian media coverage at the time. CAEJ was a partner in this successful international campaign with other Jewish groups and agencies as well, including the American Association for Ethiopian Jewry and the Joint Distribution Committee. CAEJ ceased operation in 1992 after the entire Ethiopian Jewish community was airlifted to Israel.
