Fonds consists of selected major boiler/steam plant projects for electrical utilities, railways, government and military installations and industries, 1947-1965. Major clients include the CPR, RCAF, University of Toronto, Ottawa Civic Hospital and Atomic Energy Canada. Files contain correspondence, proposals, drawings and operating instructions. Also drawings for standard and specialized boilers from the Erie City Iron Works, Erie PA.

John Inglis Company. Boiler Division : John Inglis (1823-1899) was born in Scotland and trained as a millwright and founder before coming to Canada in 1850. He worked for Thomas Lowrie and John Gartshore before becoming a partner in the Wellington Foundry in Guelph in 1859. In 1871, the partnership of Inglis & Hunter was formed and ten years later it moved from Guelph to Toronto. In 1887, the Company became John Inglis and Sons.

As a foundry and general engineering works, Inglis made almost everything in metal including stationary and marine engines, pumps, machinery etc. The Company became well known for its boilers, ranging from domestic hot water heaters to large institutional heating systems. As factories and industrial processes became substantially larger in the twentieth century, the Inglis Boiler Division became a recognized designer and fabricator of large boiler systems and steam plants. It supplied equipment to electrical utilities, railway yards, government installations, processing companies and manufacturers. By the 1950s, it was building specialized boilers for nuclear power stations. Inglis divested itself of its heavy engineering business in 1965. The Boiler Division was sold to Volcano Inc.
