Fonds consists of documents created or accumulated by Henry Davis during his lifetime. The material relates to his functions and activities as Canadian Secretary to the Queen; as a Royal Canadian Air Force pilot and prisoner of war during the Second World War; as a diplomat with Canada's Department of External Affairs; and as Secretary, Constitutional Conferences and Secretary, Canadian Intergovernmental Conferences.

The fonds also contains records of a family and personal nature, including correspondence documenting work on the construction of canals of his grand-father, William Davis, and of his father, Michael Patrick Davis, during the 19th and early 20th century, as well as trips by Henry Davis to Europe in the 1930s and his involvement in the National Council of the YMCA.

Davis, Henry F. (Henry Francis), 1914-2000 : Henry Francis Davis was born at Ottawa, Ontario, on 30 January 1914. He was the son of Michael Patrick and Gertrude Ann Davis. He received his B.A. from Bishop's University in 1932, his B.C.L. from McGill University in 1935 and was admitted to the Bar of Quebec in 1936. He also was given an honorary DCL from Bishop's University in 1996. Davis served in the RCAF, 1940-1946, during the 2nd World War where he was taken prisoner of war in Germany. He later joined the Department of External Affairs and served in diplomatic posts in Ottawa, Buenos Aires and Paris. He served as Chief of Protocol from 1961 to 1964; as special advisor to the Privy Council, 1964 to 1969; as Secretary, Constitutional Conferences, 1969-1972; and as Secretary, Canadian Intergovernmental Conferences from 1973 to 1982.

He served as the Queen's Canadian Secretary for her visits from 1978 to 1982 and continued to provide analysis of the Canadian political scene to the Queen's Secretary in England until 1993. He was appointed Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 1978, Extra Gentleman Usher to Her Majesty in 1984 and a member of the Order of Canada in 1985. Henry Davis was also president of the National Council of the YMCA from 1977 to 1979. He died in 2000.
