From April 22 to July 30, 1986, five people crossed the Northwest Territories, from mainland Yellowknife to the Arctic Coast in order to produce a documentary film. They chose to travel on foot instead of by canoe, to see more of the land, and to experience its vastness. The theme of the film is transformation. It shows the changes that occured in the landscape and within the crew, during their 100-day journey. Their expedition followed the Yellowknife River to the source Greenstockings Lake, eastward to the Snare River and northward to Winter Lake. Northeast to Lake Providence, Coppermine River (in the area of John Franklin's tragic expedition of 1820-22) and then along Point Lake to the northeastern arm of Itchen Lake then to Rocking Horse Lake to Takijuq Lake (now Napaktulik Lake) north to Atanaarik Lake and the Asiak River to Coppermine. The film emphasizes the landscape and the rapid changes that occur during the brief Arctic summer. It is also a chronicle of the struggles of five young adventurers on an uncertain journey. They are driven by a curiosity about the Arctic and by a love for wilderness.
