The fonds consists of microfilmed records of the Middlemore Homes relating to the creation and operation of a child welfare organization and its efforts to assist, train and emigrate impoverished and endangered children. The records are organized into the following types of documentation: Settlement and Reports of Children sent to Canada, Committee and House Committee Minute Books, Application Books, History Books, Parents' Consent Forms and Aftercare Visits, Case Files, correspondence and printed annual reports. There is also a printed history. The records are, for the most part, textual in nature. This material is located on the following microfilm reels: A-1994 to A-2060, A-2078 and A-2079, A-2084 to A-2110, A-2112 to A-2137 and A-2180-2181.

Volume 1 consists of photocopies of unrestricted portions of reels A-1995 and A-2091: files MS 517/95, MS 517/96, MS 517/97.

Middlemore Children's Emigration Homes : In the nineteenth century, children living in deprived areas of large cities in Great Britain were at serious risk when their families lacked the means to provide the necessities of life or where parents or guardians were unable to provide a supportive home environment. In Birmingham, England, several men undertook child care initiatives during the period 1862 to 1872. One of them, John T. Middlemore, opened two small houses in Birmingham to provide assistance to children at high risk from crime and destitution. His aim was to train them and to transfer them by means of emigration to Canada to what would hopefully be a more positive life. On 1 May 1873, he escorted 29 children to Canada. By 1926, 5,000 children had been sent to Canada by Middlemore homes.

A voluntary society, Middlemore relied upon donations and subscriptions for its work. It selected and trained only those children who appeared to be suitable candidates for emigration. They were sent to a receiving home at Halifax, Nova Scotia and were settled in all of the Maritime Provinces: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. They were also sent to Ontario and later to British Columbia.

Children were only sent to Canada upon the request of families, and through the Canadian manager of the Homes. After 1915, the flow of children across the Atlantic was interrupted by World War 1. Following the end of the war, the work of the Homes continued but Canadian legislation in 1924 restricted the emigration of those children under the age of 14 years to Canada. Only two parties of children under 14 were sent to the Maritime Provinces in 1928 and 1930. After 1924, children were also sent to Australia under a joint scheme with the Fairbridge Society and by 1930, children were mostly being sent to Australia, but also to British Columbia. Since 1955, the Homes has cared for children within the family unit.

Custodial history:

The original records of Middlemore Children's Emigration Homes were microfilmed through the offices of Birmingham Archives Service in England by the terms of a joint agreement between Middlemore, on the one hand, and the National Library of Australia and the National Archives of Canada on the other, starting in 1992. Those portions of the microfilmed records which pertain entirely to Australia were received by the National Library of Australia. The majority of the microfilmed records were, however, received by the National Archives of Canada in three accessions. These latter records pertain, for the most part, to children who were sent to Canada.
