Fonds consists of records which illustrate the activities of the Douglas-Coldwell Foundation, an organization dedicated to examining and publicising the ideals and tenets of Canadian democratic socialism. Many of the leading political figures of the Canadian Left have been involved with this organization, including Tommy Douglas, Allan Blakeney and Cliff Scotton, and this fonds demonstrates their activities with the Foundation. Containing financial records, membership lists, plans for seminars, records of grants to support research and publications, the fonds provides an insight into the Foundation's actions and activities as an educational vehicle of the Canadian Left. This fonds is divided into six series: Organization and Administration, 1971-1993, volume 1; Grants and Projects, 1933-1993, volumes 1-2; M.J. Coldwell, 1972-1987, volumes 2-3; T.C. Douglas, 1944-1986, volumes 3-4; Membership, 1971-1986, volume 4; and Finances, 1971-1993, volume 4.

Douglas-Coldwell Foundation : The Douglas-Coldwell Foundation was established in 1971 in order to support research and study from a social democratic viewpoint. The Foundation was named in honour of T.C. Douglas and M.J. Coldwell, two long-time influential members of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation and its successor, the New Democratic Party. The first president of the Foundation was Laurier Lapierre, 1971-1973, who was succeeded by Tommy Douglas, who held the presidency until his death in 1986. Mr. Douglas was followed in this position by Kalmen Kaplansky. In 1987 the Douglas-Coldwell Foundation amalgamated with the Ontario Woodsworth Memorial Foundation but retained its name and chief ambition, to create a Canadian counter-part to the Fabian Society of Great Britain.

The Douglas-Coldwell Foundation supports research with grants and scholarships at several Canadian universities, and gives monetary assistance to aid in the publication of some materials. It has also financially supported several conferences and has provided monetary assistance to several similar organizations. The funds necessary to support these activities are gathered through donations and annual membership fees. In addition to expenditures of its own monies, the Foundation has also administered some independent scholarship funds.
