Fonds consist of memoirs of Charles Swait of the 4th Battlion, Rifle Brigade. Swait's memoirs describe the years 1874-1878, but were written in Canada based on notes made in India. The memoirs describe in a detailed manner the customs and flora and fauna of India.

Swait, Charles Edward, 1859-1936 : Charles Edward Swait born in 1859 at Isleworth, Middlesex, England, and joined the British Army in June 1875 serving with the 4th Battalion, Rifle Brigade. He served as an aide to General F.L. Wilson and travelled extensively throughout the world on a political-military journey. Later stationed in India, he was involved in three campaigns in the Second Afghan War. He came to Canada in 1884 to join his father who was an Alderman for the City of Toronto.
