Matlow, Esther, 1930- : Esther Matlow, community leader, served as national president of the Hadassah-WIZO Organization of Canada from Nov. 1990 to Nov. 1993. Her term of office spanned an historic period, from the events leading up to and including the Persian Gulf War, to the signing of the Middle East peace accords. A forty-year member of the organization, she served it in a variety of executive capacities before her election as president.

Hadassah-WIZO is the largest and most influential national Jewish women's organization in Canada. Founded in 1917, this philanthropic organization has over 17,000 members organized into city councils and local chapters in every province across Canada. In 1920, it became an affiliate of the Women's International Zionist Organization (WIZO). Through the decades its projects and activities have been instrumental in promoting the health, social and educational development of Israeli society including the disadvantaged. For example, it has provided on-going support and commitment to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Asaf Harofe Hospital, the Child Guidance Clinic and Research Institute, Neri Bloomfield Community College, Magdiel Comprehensive Secondary School and Youth Village and Schools in Hadassim and Nahalal, as well as many baby creches, daycare centres, youth clubs and senior citizen centres.

Hadassah-WIZO has also taken a prominent role in representing and promoting the interests of Canadian Jewish women. It has held public affairs seminars and workshops dealing with women's issues and human rights throughout Canada. It places special emphasis on the development of projects to enhance Jewish education and advance the role of the family in Canadian society.
