2,474 photographs : b&w and col.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of files created by Mr. Domm during his tenure as M.P. for Peterborough, 1979-1993, with the greater part of the material dating from 1986-1993. Series include biographical and personal material, mailings to constituents, news releases, speeches, Peterborough P.C. Riding Association, Town Hall Meetings, subject files, metrication, capital punishment, extradition, correspondence and scrapbooks.
Fonds also consists of photographic material which depicts activities and events during Mr. Bill Domm's tenure as M.P., 1979-1993.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Domm, Bill, 1930-2000 : Bill Domm (1930-2000), member of Parliament and businessman, was born in St. Catharines, Ontario, the son of a United Church minister. He was educated at Ryerson Institute of Technology, and later became a businessman and radio broadcaster in Peterborough. He was elected Member of Parliament for Peterborough as a Progressive Conservative in 1979, re-elected in 1980, 1984 and 1988, and defeated in 1993. He was appointed Deputy House Leader for the Official Opposition in 1983, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs in 1984.
As an M.P., Domm led a campaign for voluntary, as opposed to mandatory, conversion to the metric system and for abolition of Metric Commission Canada during the last Trudeau ministry, 1980-1984. He also campaigned for restoration of the death penalty, and was able to obtain a free vote in the House of Commons on the subject in 1988. He led a similar campaign for the extradition to the United States of serial killer Charles Ng, and in 1989 presented a Private Member's Bill to the House of Commons providing for the reform of the extradition process.
Domm also led a successful campaign for the restoration of VIA Rail service on the Toronto-Peterborough-Havelock line, 1981-1984.
